It seems as though you can buy software for almost any task you have. Yet it still surprised me when I came across an article about a new survey software. I am not sure why I didn’t expect there to be several packages of survey software available. Thousands of surveys are performed online each day, which logically would warrant a fairly extensive offering of survey software. Once I realized the clear need for survey software, I decided to spend a little time researching exactly what was out there. In addition to the fairly obvious features of a survey software, including designing surveys for the internet and telephone and tools to analyze the results, there were a great many features that I would not have thought of. Many recently published survey software packages include the ability to download the results onto your PDA, and the ability to create countless different streams of questions in the same survey.
While I have limited experience conducting surveys, and thus even less experience using survey software, I cannot imagine that many of these extra features are terribly practical or useful. I guess that decision is left to those who make regular use of survey software. As a search for survey software yielded over 40 million websites, there is obviously a clear demand for these extra features. It may be unlikely that I will ever be the person using survey software to actually conduct a survey, I will certainly be more aware of the features the next time I take an online survey.
